Letter from Susie

The past month has been another busy one. Highlights included a meeting with the analyst firm Gartner. Andy Youniss, Rocket President and CEO, and I gave a presentation on our U2 business, and I have a follow-up call scheduled at the end of this month. We’ve set the location and dates for the next U2 University in the US. This technical training event will be held in downtown Denver May 8-10, 2012. With the US venue and dates set, our next task will be to schedule the UK and Australian events. Based on your feedback, we will include more content (sessions, demos, training, etc.) on other Rocket products in our 2012 U2 University agenda. If you have suggestions for topics and technology you want covered, please send them to u2askus@rs.com.

We held our mid-year Sales meeting, attended by all the WW U2 Sales reps and Sales Engineers. The territory reviews indicated that 2011 will be another strong year for the U2 business. We had a team outing to a cooking school that was a fun team-building event, and resulted in a delicious dinner. Letter from Susie

July brought unusually wet weather to Colorado, with rain almost every afternoon. Our sympathies go out to those of you caught in the heat wave and drought that have gripped other parts of the country.

We added an important new staff member in July. Heather Smiles has joined the U2 team as our Marketing Manager. She brings strong design skills and a creative mind to our team, so we’re looking forward to “tooting our own horn” more in the future!

The slight lull brought about by vacations made July a good time to work on new licensing models for the U2 product. We revised our Standby License policy and pricing as noted in our July issue and are getting close to rolling out both Fixed Term licensing and Software as a Service (SaaS) licensing. So watch for information on both in future issues of the U2 News Flash.

I hope all of you are able to enjoy the rest of the summer, and have some fun times with family and friends before the children go back to school, which will be early August here in Colorado.

June finally brought summer weather to Colorado, as well as a summer intern for U2 Support. We have two other new employees, one in Development and one in Product Management. So between the sunny days and the increase in energy brought by new people, things have been sizzlin’ in our Denver office: We released two major product updates, SB/XA 6.1 and U2 DataVu 2.0, delivering new features and functionality requested by our customers. See below for further details or, better yet, order an evaluation copy of either product. I hope the summer weather is invigorating for you as well. Who needs those “lazy, hazy days…”?

In addition to US 4th of July holiday, the U2 team WW celebrated the end of a very successful quarter and first half of the year. Thanks to all U2 customers, as well as to the WW U2 sales team!

Dear U2 Community,

Rome was the site of last month’s WW U2 Distributor Summit. We had Distributor partners from the UK, Italy, France, Spain, Switzerland, South Africa, and Australia in attendance. The Distributors represent Rocket Software in their respective geographies, so it is important for us to discuss market conditions and sales strategies on a regular basis. We also had a demonstration of Rocket Aldon’s Application Lifecycle Management product. The Aldon and U2 teams are investigating ways to integrate this product with the U2 data servers. Watch for an update in a future U2 News Flash…

Spring finally arrived in Colorado, and is quickly morphing into summer. I hope all of you in the northern hemisphere will have the opportunity to enjoy the long days and warm weather.

Dear U2 Community,

We held a meeting at our Denver office with some of our U2 Partners. It was a productive meeting, and we were pleased to learn that many of our partners feel that the economy is recovering and businesses are resuming their investment in technology. This should result in another strong year for the U2 business.

There has been some big merger news in the U2 Partner community. In early April Apax Partners, one of the world’s leading private equity firms announced that it was acquiring both Epicor and Activant Solutions, Inc. Then later in the month P2 Energy Solutions announced it was acquiring Wellpoint Systems. Both companies have oil and gas-related solutions running on UniData. Only time will tell how these mergers might affect the overall U2 business. We live in interesting times!

U2 University Wrap Up

Dear U2 Community,

U2 University in Birmingham UK just finished. The sessions and labs on U2 DataVu were very popular. Around the world we find our customers excited to learn about this new product. We’re already running the beta for release 2.0, so contact us at u2askus@rs.com if you’d like to participate. During the keynote we announced our next new product, U2 DataGen, which is a test database generator. Watch this newsletter and our web site for the announcement of the beta program. We really value the assistance of our partners and customers in the process of bringing new product releases to market.

As you might expect, we’re already in the planning process for the next group of U2 University events, which will be held in 1H 2012. We value your input, so let us know if you have any suggestions or requests about content and/or format.

We recently finished our fourth annual U2 University in Australia, and overall feedback from attendees and sponsors was resoundingly positive. The Four Seasons Sydney was a great setting for this event, and our vendor sponsors were able to get significant face time with attendees during the vendor reception. Several dozen attendees passed their Rocket U2 certification exams, and Vernon Havemann of FirstRand STI Administration won a MacBook Air at the Networking Reception event.
